Tonight we experienced our first true Argentinian day! Starting from a quick Spanish lesson, then to a stop at a leather factory, and finally to our first experience with Argentinian students, from morning to night we got a nice, big taste of Argentina.
When we got to UADE, the Argentinian university, we got a grand tour of the place and a nice dose of recommendations for hot spots around the city. From that point on, the night escalated quite quickly to a HUGE dinner at a fancy only-meat-serving restaurant (and by only meat, I mean all-parts-of-a-cow type of meat). We met around 20 Argentinian students, and quickly hit it off! Not only was it fun to meet them, but our Spanish is slowly getting better (my favorite phrase of the night was “No hay problema!”—baby steps). Convinced to give us a good time, they each decided tonight was a night to experience the real nightlife of Buenos Aires.
After dinner, which consisted of cow intestine, kidney, liver, and meat covered in cow blood, at about midnight we made our trek to our first bar. With the streets busy with young teenagers and older couples, we made ourselves at home getting to know each other with classic Argentinian drinks as refreshments.
Soon after, at about 1:30 a.m., we headed to Kika, a nightclub in the busy main district of the city. With the grand help of our new tour guides, we got in quickly and were immediately immersed into Argentina’s dance culture. It was ridiculously fun, and the stars must have been in line for us tonight because the DJ kept playing American songs like “Jenny From The Block” and “Shut Up” and, believe it or not, Backstreet Boys songs!! Our group was so loud singing and dancing and jumping along that we must have stuck out like a sore thumb, but I think we made the club that much better!
To top off the night, we headed home at 4:30 a.m., caught a cab with a Persian driver (that made me feel a bit at home, as he spoke with me in Farsi about a lot of things in the city) and didn’t go to bed until 6 a.m. Needless to say, we did a pretty fine job of celebrating a traditional Argentinian Friday night! Can’t wait to see what else is to come, and you can keep up with our experiences right here as I update you about them! For now, hasta luego!
